Feral Dogs – Ethical Management Across NSW

Australian Environmental Vertebrate Pest Management Services (AEVPMS) provides licensed and humane management of feral dogs across private and public lands in New South Wales. Our approach prioritises environmental protection, animal welfare, and community safety through strategic, science-backed operations.

What are Feral Dogs?

Feral dogs are domestic dogs that have returned to a wild state. Unlike stray pets, feral dogs are self-sustaining, breed in the wild, and live independently of humans. They are highly adaptive, form packs, and often hunt native wildlife and livestock, posing a serious risk to biodiversity, farm productivity, and public safety.

Why are Feral Dogs a problem in Australia

Feral dogs are classified as a Category 2 Pest Animal under NSW legislation. They contribute to:

  • Predation of native fauna, including endangered species

  • Livestock attacks, especially on sheep and young cattle

  • Spread of disease, such as hydatidosis and distemper

  • Threats to domestic pets and human safety

Left unmanaged, feral dog populations grow rapidly and become increasingly difficult to control.

Our Ethical Approach

AEVPMS employs a targeted, humane, and legislatively compliant response to feral dog control. All operations are guided by a Pest Management Plan (PMP) tailored to each site and in alignment with ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001, and pestSMART protocols.

Our methods include:

  • Thermal aerial shooting (in approved zones)

  • Ground-based surveillance and control

  • Monitoring using GPS and camera traps

  • Non-toxic lures and tracking techniques

  • Coordination with local landholders and government agencies

We operate with full consideration for non-target species, community concerns, and environmental sensitivity.
