Rabbit Control – Protecting Land and Habitat with Proven Techniques

Australian Environmental Vertebrate Pest Management Services (AEVPMS) offers effective, humane, and environmentally responsible control of European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) across New South Wales. Using a combination of ground shooting, surveillance, and advanced warren destruction techniques, including den blasting, we help restore ecological balance and reduce the serious agricultural and environmental impacts caused by wild rabbits.

Why Rabbits Are a Major Pest

European rabbits are one of Australia’s most damaging invasive species, declared a Key Threatening Process under federal and state legislation. They breed rapidly and cause widespread harm to:

  • Pasture and crops, competing directly with livestock

  • Native flora, through overgrazing and bark stripping

  • Soil stability, by causing erosion through burrowing

  • Habitat availability, impacting threatened species

  • Infrastructure, by undermining roads, dams, and levees

Left uncontrolled, rabbit populations quickly rebound, requiring integrated, sustained control strategies.

AEVPMS Rabbit Control Program

We apply a multi-method approach tailored to each landscape and infestation level. Every site is managed under a formal Pest Management Plan (PMP), aligned with ISO and pestSMART standards.

Our rabbit control methods include:

  • Thermal and night-vision ground shooting for immediate population reduction

  • Surveillance via camera traps and ground sign assessment

  • Integrated feral predator control, especially foxes and cats that interact with rabbit populations

  • Exclusion fencing advice and monitoring

Warren Blasting – Long-Term Den Elimination

A key component of our rabbit control program is warren destruction, including den blasting using pneumatic or explosive methods. This technique is highly effective for eliminating breeding sites and preventing re-establishment.

Our den blasting process:

  • Is conducted by licensed, experienced operators

  • Uses low-impact, controlled charges or compressed air tools to collapse warren systems

  • Is targeted to minimise non-target species disturbance

  • Follows strict WHS protocols and environmental safety standards

  • May be integrated with fumigation or baiting where required and approved

This method is particularly valuable in rocky terrain, transport corridors, and infrastructure zones where conventional machinery access is limited.

🌿 We Operate Across:

  • Agricultural land and cropping zones

  • Revegetation and biodiversity offset sites

  • Railway lines, roadsides, and levees

  • National parks and council reserves

  • Remote and sensitive environmental areas
